Irish Hotels Irish Food?
I am straying away from Hotel talk a bit today. Currently there is a lot of talk these days about food miles. Buying your food locally is the new buzz work but how practical is this? I live near 2 major supermarket chains & I find it is very difficult to get Irish vegetables. Last week in one of these stores I could not find Irish carrots. Now I do like my food and also like produce from countries all around the world but if I want a carrot I want an Irish one and not one that has travelled half way around the world. As far as I know we still grow carrots in this country?
Famers Markets
It is great to see the growth of farmers markets around the country. I love going to them but only when they are done well. One of the things that does annoy me is when some markets charge excessive prices for local produce. Here is the way I see it. A farmer sells a bag of potatoes to a supermarket chain and gets €1. The supermarkets sell the potatoes to the customer for €3. The Farmer goes to the farmers market all sells the same bag of potatoes for €2. They get €1 more and the customer pays €1 less. Both are happy. I have seen some markets where the potatoes are more expensive then the Supermarket? I don’t know maybe this is an Irish thing.
Thankfully there are some great Farmers Markets out there that have the balance right. I have been at the Midleton Market in Co Cork a lot and the experience and the quality of food are a joy to behold. Can You Book A Hotel In Ireland Without A Credit Card?
The financial regulator released a survey yesterday showing that 61% of Irish people do not own a credit card. Are you part of this 61%?
These days it is very hard to travel without a credit card.
Flying
Ok Aer Lingus does take Laser but Ryainair does not. That means if you just use a Laser Card then the bonus of competition in the air does not benefit you. You have to use Aer Lingus. Other options? Ask a friend. Been there & we all know it is not ideal.
Prepaid Credit Card –
I used these a while back. The problem I found is if you topped up €100 and the item you purchased was €90 it was a complete pain to claim back the €10. All of the time I ended up paying €100 for the €90 item.
Irish Hotels
It is becoming impossible to book an Irish Hotel without a Credit or Laser Card. Online you cannot do it. Calling Hotels direct it is getting more difficult to book over the phone with a card & the price you are told is the price you pay.
You may have seen a great Irish Hotel Offer but needed a Credit Card. You maybe able to send a deposit by post but then again it is a bit of a pain.

- Book in Advance - If you know when you are looking to get away try an book as early as possible, similar to the airline industry, hotels yield their rates and increase their rates as their supply decreases.
- Flexible Travel Dates - If you are flexible with your dates and can travel during an off peak time (midweek) you will most likely get a very good hotel deal. Also follow tip 1.
- Inclusive Hotel Packages- Book an inclusive hotel package such as a 2BB1D (2 Nights Bed & Breakfast & 1 evening meal) you will get better value. If you book a bed & breakfast rate and then decide to have dinner at the hotel, you often will be given the A La Carte menu which is priced higher.
- Email Newsletters - Join hotel websites email newsletter alerts, by doing this you will be the first to hear about the latest offers. Many of these offers have limited availability so if you are first to know about it you should get a hotel deal.
- Enter Competitions - If you come across a hotel competition enter your details, if you don’t win the first prize you often get exclusive offers for simply entering your details.
- Friends & Family Programs - If you have family, friends or relatives that work in a hotel you should ask them does the hotel run a friends and family programs. This programs have low cost hotel offers exclusively for friends and family.

Ok its time to get into the real secrets of how hotels work. In my experience hoteliers are among the most professional & hardworking of all occupations. It is a tough job dealing with the public all day and can be a very high pressured job but certain things can happen to make this even more pressurised.
Hotel Book Outs What Is It?
Basically it happens when a hotel sells more rooms then it has available. Why do they do this? Like the airlines, hotels will have a certain amount of cancellations each day.
Say for example I am a Dublin City Hotel. I have 100 rooms. Demand is good so I have no problem filling my hotel. The problem is I know from experience that on average 10% will cancel. Some will cancel too late for me to re sell my rooms. With this in mind I decide to sell 110 rooms for this busy day. Is this reckless? Not really I am going on facts and if I don’t do this and 10 rooms cancel and I have 10 empty rooms left for a day I should be full then I am in trouble with the boss.
97% of the time all works out ok and everyone is happy. I overbook 10 rooms and 10 rooms cancel. Yippy.
What if only 7 rooms cancel? Ok I am less 3 rooms than I need, 3 of these guests will have to be booked out to another hotel. How do I decide which 3? It usually comes down to first come first served I am praying that 3 of these 7 people won’t turn up so I give the 4 available rooms to the first 4 guests and sweat it out then. These 3 turn up I have to book them out to another hotel.
How Do You Avoid The Book Out Blues?
If you know it is a very busy day (maybe a concert on in Dublin) give the Hotel a call the day before saying what time you will arrive. This lets the Hotel know you will be 100% turning up.
Arrive as early as possible and check in. The problems will occur for later guests.
Sometimes it is whoever shouts loudest will get accommodated but if the Hotel has no room when you arrive this will not help. They are not going to kick someone out for you!! No matter how loud you shout!
